TV: 17th Annual Television Award Nominations

AmericanHorrorStoryThe nominations for the 17th Annual OFTA Television Awards have been announced.

Best Movie/Miniseries nominee American Horror Story: Asylum tops this year’s nominations tallies with 20, a new record for the movies and miniseries categories, previously held in a tie by Angels in America and Merlin, with 19 nominations each. This is the series’ first year in the limited series categories, last year it competed in the regular series category.

The second-most nominated program of the year was Game of Thrones, which was nominated for Best Drama Series. leads this year’s nominations with 18. Third on the list was movie Behind the Candelabra with 17. Rounding out the Top 5 most nominated programs this year were Drama Series nominee Mad Men and Comedy Series nominee Modern Family, each with 15 nominations. Another nominee in the Best Drama Series category, American Horror Story came in second with 15 nominations. (EDITOR Note: Due to a typographical error, Modern Family has only 14 nominations. The nomination Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for Matt Bomer should be for the series The New Normal.)

Third place went to Movie/Miniseries nominee Game Change with 14 nominations. With 13 nominations each, two other Movie/Miniseries nominees came in tied for fourth: Hatfields & McCoys and Sherlock, which becomes the first movie/miniseries to earn nominations in two years since Prime Suspect picked up its second series mention five years ago.

Joining American Horror Story: Asylum and Behind the Candelabra in Best Motion Picture or Miniseries are The Girl (12 nominations), Parade’s End (12 nominations), Phil Spector (10 nominations), Political Animals (10 nominations) and Top of the Lake (7 nominations).

In Drama Series, the nominees also include Breaking Bad (13 nominations), Dexter (2 nominations), Downton Abbey (9 nominations), Homeland (9 nominations) and The Walking Dead (12 nominations), joining the aforementioned Game of Thrones and Mad Men.

Modern Family finds itself in good company with its fellow Best Comedy Series nominees: 30 Rock (8 nominations), Arrested Development (8 nominations), The Big Bang Theory (7 nominations), Girls (7 nominations), Louie (4 nominations), Parks and Recreation (6 nominations), and Veep (5 nominations).

The winners will be announced on Sunday, August 25, 2013.
